Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance

Today's regulatory framework for manufacturing facilities is constantly evolving. Keeping up-to-date with the ever changing statute book can be a challenge in its self. GSA have extensive experience in delivering safe environmentally sound solutions for numerous clients.

The European regulatory framework is considered to be one of the most heavily regulated regions in the world for process manufacturing. If your organisation operates outside of the EU regulatory framework, the learning points from this region can be implemented anywhere no matter where your operations may be based. Any advice offered will adhere to any local regulatory requirements. Services carried out by GSA's Health, Safety and Environmental Specialist at different stages of the project have recently included:

Genzyme

Location: Haverhill, UK
Client: Genzyme
Scope: Site Audit, Pharmaceuticals, Full DSEAR Assessment
Date: Sept 2004 to Dec 2004

| More Information.. | Click to close |

The Client:
The site had developed over a number of years as independent production units. The processes and machinery were designed and built to differing standards. Across the site different production buildings produced a range of different products.

The challenge was to audit, risk access and standardise documentation across the site without compromising quality and safety.

The Solution:
GSA developed an approach with the client to:

  • Audit the plant to understand and catalogue hazardous areas & materials
  • Produce hazardous area documentation for the whole site
  • Undertake mechanical risk assessments
  • Produce recommendations for improvement according to the mechanical risk assessment
  • Develop explosive protection documentation
  • Deliver training for engineers requiring an understanding of the documentation and procedures.

GSA were also awarded the contract to conduct further zoning studies, helping the client achieve full legal compliance under DSEAR for the whole site.

Feedback:
The Engineering Manager said "I felt GSA were very helpful and honest".

CCL Packing Line

Location: Scunthorpe, UK
Client: ColepCCL Ltd
Scope: Packing Line Refurbishment, ATEX / DSEAR
Date: March 05 to July 05

| More Information.. | Click to close |

The Client:
The client was moving a packaging plant handling flammable material from Europe to the UK. This had an impact on existing product lines, as well as existing hazardous area classifications. Under ATEX the client become its own UK supplier, forcing the client to become responsible for providing ATEX compliant machinery.

The Challenge:
The filling and capping areas of the machinery were originally designed for safe area use only. GSA provided technical advice in forming the required physical and supplier documentation for ATEX / DSEAR compliance.

The Solution:
GSA developed a new ATEX compliant design for the machinery, working with a number of sub-contractors to implement the changes.

Feedback:
The project and documentation was provided to the client on time and to budget. The client commissioned the expansion of the product line.

Petroplus

Location: Coryton, UK
Client: Petroplus
Scope: Full HAZOP study
Date: 2006 to 2007

| More Information.. | Click to close |

The Client:
Petroplus's Coryton Refinery undergoes a HAZOP study for the whole refinery every 10 years. Together with the clients engineers, GSA had to develop an approach reducing the burden upon refinery personnel.

The Challenge:
GSA had to develop an approach without too much involvement from the client. Each process unit being reviewed on a unit by unit basis, taking into account any site specific issues.

The Solution:
GSA supplied a team including:

  • an experienced study leader
  • a process engineer with experience specific to refinery operations
  • an instrumentation engineer with detailed sector experience
  • a secretary
  • plus other experts when required

The team carried out an initial site inspection to determine any specific issues on site. The study team leader collected relevant documentation from the client. To avoid any disruption to refinery personnel, any actions were communicated to the client during the study. This helped to resolve any issues promptly.

Feedback:
At the end of the project, results were presented to the client with a final report for future reference.
